When Irene finally got another night off a week later, she couldn’t wait to let Charles know. She was excited to show him the first of her new dresses. He had been right yet again; the fact he didn’t know what they looked like added to the thrill of the reveal. She thought back to her reaction when she’d learned he hadn’t picked the dresses himself and felt bad for expecting so much from him.

‘I can’t wait for our dinner together,’ he beamed when she dropped into the factory to tell him the good news. ‘I’ll make sure we have a table waiting for us at the Cleveland Hotel. You can meet me there at seven o’clock.’ He gave her a kiss before striding off with a spring in his step. Irene felt happy for the rest of the day. Despite the occasional insensitive comment – and what man didn’t make those from time to time? – she couldn’t believe just how good Charles could make her feel.

After much dithering, she decided on the brown dress for dinner. Everyone else was out when she got herself ready, so she took some time to admire her reflection in the full-length mirror in Helen and Ruby’s room. She almost didn’t recognise the woman in her reflection. She felt like a new person, and she knew that was all down to Charles.

A wave of guilt swept over her, then. She knew so much about Charles and he was doing so much for her, yet she was keeping such a big part of her life from him. He had even told her about his wife! She decided it was high time to tell him about her years in the children’s home. Honesty was the least she owed him. And she knew now that things like that didn’t bother him. She’d been so worried about wearing her old dress to dinner, but it wasn’t the fact she didn’t have anything better to wear that had upset him. The more she thought about it, the more confident she was about Charles accepting her – poverty and all.

At the restaurant, Irene’s heart skipped a beat when the waitress showed her to a table where Charles was waiting. His face came alive when he looked up and saw her walking towards him.

‘You’re a complete vision,’ he gasped as he stood to greet her with a tender kiss. Wrapping his arm around her waist, he pulled her in close and raised her hand so he could kiss the back of it. It was such an intimate move, it sent shivers down Irene’s spine. As Charles pulled out a chair for her, she tried to regain her composure, but he’d completely flustered her. ‘You look beautiful, I’m so lucky to be dining with you,’ he said.

Irene couldn’t have asked for a better evening. The two of them enjoyed some wonderful conversation and she was feeling so comfortable as they finished their meals that she started gearing up to make her confession.
